The New Fearless is a neo-related fansite, with lots of fun things to do! There are graphics, guides, tutorials, and other helpful things for your own website, as well as insightful blogs about everything! Visit TNF now!

There are two layouts that I have, and I would appreciate it if you had a look at both of them. I used PHP Includes on this site, so i wouldn't be surprised if a lot of it showed up as error or invalid codes.

Also, I have a twitter app on my profile.. incase that messes up any codes.

I finally had the time to do a review for you.

Using Firefox in Vista at a resolution of 1280x800

Pre-warning, I might be too blunt/rude in any part of the review, so I apologise beforehand.

    ===============
    First Impression
    ===============
Green. Loads of it. There's also too many other colours that don't go that well with each other. Not only that, the picture of Illusen disturbs me. I'd prefer if she wasn't textured, and if she had a better border around her. I'll explain later in the design section.

    ===============
    Coding & Design
    ===============
Your CSS is also very untidy. For example, you can shorten it from

    background:url(http://i630.photobucket.com/albums/uu29/tnf/illusenbackground.jpg);background-repeat:repeat-y;background-color:#91b04c
    font:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size:20px; font-weight:200;

    to

    background: #91b04c url(http://i630.photobucket.com/albums/uu29/tnf/illusenbackground.jpg) repeat-y;
    font: 200 20px Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;

You also have invalid HTML and CSS coding. Validators are your best friend. Use them, find out what you've done wrong, and you will definitely improve your coding skills in the process.

There are also weird texts in your email / contact / etc forms. "Â Â" Instead of having multiple forms, why not have one but instead give different subject headings to differentiate them? Of course, it depends entirely on your form as well as to how different the structures are.

Ah, skins. It used to be a must-have back in those days. The more skins you have, the cooler you are. Not anymore. If your skins aren't as good as the previous one, there sure would be comparisons. But of course, it is a good alternative for visitors at the same time, especially if they do not like your current layout!

    Illusen
Too many colours! I don't see how the heading matches with a bright blue border and a more subtle green. Why not make it a fixed block of blue or no-background and change the font instead? It's not really working nicely.

Poor Illusen. Someone punched her in the face and so she got a black eye. That's what I thought when I saw your header. The border around Illusen is crappy. Same thing goes for the border of your sitetitle. Did you use MS PAINT to draw it? Because that's what I think. You also did a bad job with cropping Illusen's body, no offense.

The texture is really off as well. The colours stand out, but aren't appealing. It stands out for being oddly placed. And the browns... are they rust?!

    Poogle
This is an example of an epic fail for monochromatic designs. The contrast isn't there. I can't really read the text properly and I feel awfully dull whenever I see the layout. Readability = fail.

The dropshadow is a problem for the header. It's too dark, and then it suddenly gets lighter for the content area. A consistent shade would be much better.

    Meepit
I prefer this layout among the three. There aren't too many colours thrown into the screen, and it's quite readable. But don't be too happy soon. The drop shadow is too dark. If it were more subtle it might've given a better effect. The border again poses a problem since it isn't done nicely. It's blocked instead of being smoothly curved towards the top.

    The freakishly long sidebar
I normally won't mention this but... your sidebar is awfully long. The non-reviewing me would probably read a little bit and then not bother anymore. I don't think voting for your site is in any way more important than the content, so place that somewhere towards the bottom, or in a separate page.

Changing skins can be placed elsewhere too, for example in the about site page, or alternatively you can make a separate page for skins like Vixx's site, http://furious-angel.com/layout/

Basically there's a lot of things in your sidebar that can be removed. As for advertising, if you've no ads to display, then a text link would suffice. Your Affies, well maybe you can put it all in a page called Links out or something. Your sidebar is cluttered as it is, there's no point catering for all of them there since no one would really bother with a very long sidebar.

I didn't even know that you were running a competition when you placed your link int he "Vote" section.

    Overall view on layouts
Your layouts should be centered, or at least given more padding. It feels rather congested at the moment and it makes me feel claustrophobic.

The text align isn't really that user-friendly. Center align should be okay for headings but normally it's easier for users to read left aligned text. Read here for more information: http://www.jemjabella.co.uk/blog/to-justify-or-not-to-justify

If you used a different style for comments and headings in the sidebar, maybe it would look better. Right now it looks the same, and would confuse visitors.

The discrepancy between serif and sans-serif fonts are annoying. I expect that the content area should have a consistent font throughout the whole site not a mix. The blog entries are sans-serif but the other pages are serif. What.

Your footer is also inconsistent. There are different styles on various pages, and I tend to get confused. I prefer it whenever the site design remains constant throughout .

    ========
    Content
    ========
There's too many pages, and I'd probably nitpick at every bit of detail so I decided to just skim through it.

    SITE:
    Meet the staff:
Irrelevant page title. It's more like an 'about me' page since you're the only staff member present. You can also get rid of this page because your information is also there in the "about site" page.

    Site Rules:
Wow, a wall of shame. This thing was sooo last century. Besides, I don't see any Wall of Shame anywhere. At all.

altar =/= alter. Altar is used for religious rites. Alter means changing. So there's no need to use both change and alter in the sentence.

"new codes as your own!" I don't think of your codes as 'new' in any way, no offense. Because it's a general thing. You just assembled other available codes together, not making it from scratch.

"You are not allowed to alter the graphics on my site (by removing my sites credit, or cutting and pasting portions of the image)" ... didn't you do that for your layout itself?

I also don't see a chatbox anywhere, so there's no point having rules for that.

    Credits:
"Credits are an important part of any website. They thank the people that did the work, and show who exactly did what." You did not credit the real creators of the images. Google did not create anything you used on your site. Google is just a search engine.

    CONTENT:
The graphics do not interest me one bit, no offense. They're good, but not striking or attention-grabbing. I know what I liked when I was younger and still played Neopets, and most of the things you've offered didn't give me the same feeling :( Well, aside from that I'd suggest that you remove celebrity layouts unless you have permission from the creators to use those graphics.

Random Guides: how to use photobucket. I feel like I've been viewed as a complete idiot when reading that. I think it's a rather useless tutorial since photobucket itself is very user friendly. Back when I started off in the internet, I could use Photobucket with ease.

Game guides still have something to do with Neopets. When I first read Neopets guides, I expected every single guide about the whole game itself, not just the pets. You should merge the two together.

'Lists' also should be merged. It still is part of Neopets. And I suggest using tables to present your data. Right now I find that it's too empty. There's too much blank space.

Your section, "Editorial" is a broken link. Fix it, or remove it.

    INTERACTIVE:
    Plug board:
The content area is short, no? I can't display the buttons properly. There are some that are cut off. I know that there's an iframe for it, but can't you make it of a larger height?

    Advertising:
Still the weird text. Do something about it..

    Review:
Broken link for Dream Graphics. Fix it or remove.
Honestly speaking, your coding sills itself isn't that great, so I wouldn't suggest that you offer reviews just year for that particular section. It might actually bite you back if you try to correct others.

    CuteNews hosting:
Oh god, NO. Cutenews is highly insecure, so do not ever offer that! The development of Cutenews has been stopped, so there's no point using a script that doesn't update itself to overcome security holes.

And you're not hosting them either. You're only installing cutenews for them. Hosting them equals to your own space and that they're a part of your space, not you signing up for another hosting account for them and installing cutenews.

You should check http://www.jemjabella.co.uk/articles/unsafe-php-scripts and http://codegrrl.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=16937 if you're curious. There are other safer alternatives to CuteNews.

    GENERAL:
You have a lot of pages with little content, so why not merge them? This will be easier too for us visitors :) There are also a lot of broken links, so either fix them or remove them completely. There's no need to show us something that's not there.

    ===========
    Conclusion
    ===========
I probably wouldn't come back though, since it's not exactly the type of sites that I'd like to browse. Your site is nearly there, but not quite either. I know you've put in a lot of effort for your site, but there's always room for improvements.

    I've given you two stars.

All the best with your site! :)

I just rated the layout. :] (Default theme)

Ugh, all of your text and links are bold. That is a definite no-no. Your layout is of low quality, the color scheme is bad and the image looks blurry. Blue, green, brown, and yellow don't match very well, in my opinion.

I really recommend making your CSS a little more creative. Your text looks plain and boring. Black text on a light brown background don't go well together.

Your layout isn't the best but it's honestly not that bad. Just try working on your color schemes and image quality. :]

    Hey Aashni. :]
    Ashley here~

I am using Interenet explorer, just so you know :]
Also I apologize for all harshness.
And if I didn't rate something that means it was fine.

Ready to get started with the review??

First lets start with the Layout:
I like the outline you made on the banner but I feel that the background
doesn't go with the faerie at all. I can't even tell what the background is supposed
    to be...
But I do like the texture you used. :]

Something that has always annoyed me I think is your cutenews, I don't like how
and bold your text is, whenever I go to read your blog its always so overwelming
and it makes me think "When is it going to end?" You make really good blogs I
just feel the cutenews makes the blog seem boring and makes your visitors wish
    for the end of it.
Maybe unbold it or just have the bold for your headers and make the text smaller.
It would make everything look so much neater.

I know the colors go somewhat with the banner up top but the blue and brown
and light brown don't match at all, I don't like the color combination and I would like
it so much more if you just had the green for where you had your brown and tan
colors so there was only brown and green.

Lastly I think your website page goes down really far, maybe try deleting a few of
your last posts or control how many posts you have on the front page at once.
It just seems really long to me which is quite annoying.

Something I also noticed about the skins...is that only the one you have as defult works
I don't know if it is just my computer or interenet explorer or what but it doesn't work
if you want to use one of the other skins.

Other than all of that I give your layout a 7/10.

Ok I only have two things to say about 'The site' section.
First, it really bugs me how some of your pages text is bold and uppercase.
It looks really messy and hard to read.

Lastly I don't understand why websites have wall of shame's when no one is on them.
I find them pointless. You only need one when you come across someone you
    need to put on there.

    The site section: 5/10

Ok now my favorite part, content.
    Lets start with graphics.

First with the graphics page, why don't you just divide it up as 'Non-NR graphics' and
    'NR graphics'
It would be alot easier for your vistors if you divided the sections, not the type
    of graphics.

    Petpage layouts-NR-These are really good!
I would have to say the altador themed are your best ones.
I think you did a great job and I really think you should add more.

Petpage layouts-Random Related- Why don't you just call it 'Non-neorealted'? Random
    realated just seems, odd.
But other than that I really like it :]

Userlookups- non-neorealted.- These yet again are really good. My favorite is the
tinkerbell one. The colors you choose are great.

    Welcome banners- Neo-realated.
These are the ones I think look really bad.
The first one is alright. I really like the text box I feel you used way to much on it
and in the picture I don't know if it is credit of something else but I see the words
'Shutterolock' or something like that. which looks really bad. I don't know if
you meant to have it but to me it looks like credit of somebody else.
And the last welcome banner is in very poor quality. It looks like it could have
been made on ms paint and ms word.

Guild layouts- NR- Splat- These are the best thing on your website in my opinion.
These are amazing. I love the rainbow. You really need to make more of these.
Guild layouts- Non-Neo- full- These aren't my favorite but they are still good.

    Graphics overall: 8/10

    Tutorial-
The one tutorial that you have is good. But you should consider making more!

    Tutorails- 10/10

    Editorial-

It won't open on my computer. I am not sure if it is just mine or everyone elses
but the editorial goes to a HTTP 404 page.

    Overall score:
    3/5 stars
I think your site has a lot of room for improve ment. But I think it is decent enough right
now. If you just change a few things it will be alot better!

    Hope this helped~

Pocci gave it **--- on 3rd May 2009 and said:

Hey there (: I'm Pocci and I'm here to review your site using a 1280 x 800 resolution in Firefox. Don't take any criticisms too harshly. Lets get started, okay? :]

    First impressions:

    illusen lyt.
At first, I thought your layout was slightly...fliter abused? And over textured. The colours go well togther, though.

CSS wise, the font is bolded, and I find that somewhat scary and never have uppercase letters for headers. Ever. Remove the text-transform:uppercase and font-weight: bold now~! D: Also, don't abuse the border-rights and border-lefts and green + bright blue don't go overly well together. Remove the underline in the links while your at it.

    meepit lyt.
Oh god, the pink is literally burning my screen down. How many shades of pink can you use for css? And what's with the overly brightly colourized meepits in the background? It's like a neon army, I swear. And the advertisement in the sidebar, the flashy thing, has got to go.

    poogle lyt.
To be honest, you should've left the poogles alone and not texture or filter the edges it looks a bit bleh. But this is the best skin you really have. The welcome on the layout is bit too corny for me, if you want a welcome put it in a sidebar or something. The brushes are nice though. But the CSS for this skin, you might want to work on.

& Yes, get rid of that really really long sidebar. And chatbox. You can leave comments in the blog? Also, get extreme tracker so instead of having like topsites AND a hits counter you can have extremetracker which tracks everything so the topsites and hits counter are like useless.

With the affies thing, give your affiliates the respect of at least having their names there. Simply being an "x" is sorta disrespectful & get rid of the "why am i in a scroller" link. You can jam all that in of the apply for affiliates page.

    Site section
Apply...apply for what? Your pages need headings! Otherwise it's highly unorganized.
I got confused reading the rules..first you are like, "mine" then your "us". It's either one person or multiple people, make sure its consistent. And with having staff, I think have 2 graphics a week is pretty harsh.
Lastly, separate the two forms, theres an examples box and you don't need examples to be an affiliate.
& Whats with the "Â "s at the bottom of the form?

For the "about the site", please talk in first person.

Contact page needs a heading AND you needa get rid of those  s at the bottom of the form. They're getting annoying.

Link back - "we"? Last time I checked the staff page, you were flying solo. Also, get rid of the white background and center the table so it looks a tad better.

    Credits - heading has disappeared..?

By the way, what's with your main font changing constantly?

Wall of shame - most neopet sites have this and honestly, i hate these. They're a cry for attention and make people seem completely egotistical. I would remove it if I were you.

Old layouts - theres none there and I suggest you remove it, its a waste of space.

    Content

    Graphics

On the index page, I was instantly surrounded by bars. I'm pretty sure you can do better than bars. I think having them in the sidebar is enough!

Petpages:: n-r. - When its being displayed, the previews are slightly to the right. Bothers me a bit. Other than that, the petapges are clean and simple. But I think you overdid the brushes in the korbat one and all the layouts are the same - brushes base, images slapped on top. Doesn't show much effort.

Petpages:: altador. - Okay, I hope you know the petpages were for altador cup so I expected to see yooyus flying around the petpages.

Petpages:: misc themed? - The notebook petpage has been the best I've seen out of all your petapges. It's clean and simple. I don't think you've blended the images properly or cut them out in the numb3rs petpage.

Userlookups:: non neo - They're the same style which equals boring. & un-italicize the text. Its starting to annoy me.

Userlookups:: neo - They're boring in my opinion, I wouldn't use them. They're cute but you can do better than that.

Welcome banners - they aren't really useful and they're overdone.

Random banners - If they're "random", you can always use them as banner bases.

Guild layouts - as far as I'm concerned, "splat" isn't a type of layout. It's blog style or full page. The first NR one is very good, but the font for "rainbow" looks out of place. By the way, don't overbrush the backgrounds. If you want to jazz it up a bit, use some textures.

Backgrounds - er. Its so dark. And don't forget headings!!

By the way, you should organise the index page better. There's a nr banner section and banner section..? Also remember to give your pages HEADINGS.

    Tutorials

Nothing new here, its the same with almost every other neopet fansite. Outline tutorial.

    Guides

Random guides?!? I would place how to use photobucket under tutorials. And please don't name your sections like that.

Neopet guides - all this stuff isn't really new. I think they could be explained better though.

Game guides - I'm sure over half the neopian population would know how to play Kass Basher but the Adver Video one is definitely an original one.

    Editorial

What have we got here? A broken link! Be sure to check your links so they aren't BROKEN.

    Request

Headings, don't ever forget the headings!!! And in your form, you should also put, what do you want to request. Saves the requester a bit of trouble :)

    interactive

Plugboard I don't get why you plugged your site heaps of times, I mean the visitor is already at your site so plugging yourself is kind of useless.

Advertising With the button size, I think you should have a more common button size like 88 x 31? And don't forget yourr full stops for rules 3 - 5.

Reviewing Please please please don't say "we" when it's one person.

Cutenews hosting Okay, get rid of cutenews hosting. Cutenews is an unsafe and vile script which is easily hackable.

    overall
Your site need improvement, remember to add headings!

Vera gave it **--- on 1st May 2009 and said:

I've been seeing this layout around for quite some time, but didn't really know if you'd appreciate my type of reviews. Since you asked though, here I am. And yeah, feel free to add the (not so imaginary) manic grin as well. :P

    = First Impression=
    -------------------------------------
That's a cute pink plush-toy-thingie... but things are way too pink for my peace of mind.

    = Presentation =
    ---------------------------------
I've never been to Neopets, aside during the odd link-hopping. So, my idea of it is mainly some kiddie site where there are (cute) multicolored animals. If I were a regular visitor, I'd probably click around on a few links. I like cute drawings, a lot. But I can't say I'd be particularly interested in spending more than a couple of minutes here. That's not necessarily a bad thing, as I assume you wish to cater to a certain kind of audience.

I'm glad to notice that you have more than one skin, which means I can probably get to a layout with a less stark color. Heh, I almost forgot that alternate skins used to be a must-have on graphic sites.
Well then, let's take the layouts (skins) one by one:

    Pink
That pink rabbit-toothed animal attracts quite a bit of attention... which is fine: it's a cute one. I'm not entirely sure about the rest of the multi-colored animals in the background, though. The fact that they're the exact same animal (only in a different color) kind of causes them to "flow together". Yeah, sure they have contrasting colors, but it still feels as if I'm seeing double or something.

Your layout is left aligned, which is really annoying. Sure you have a big enough header image that I don't automatically glance at the middle of the page (as I usually do). However, I still get a lot of blank pink space. My resolution is not even that large (1280x1024px), think of others with wide screens and resolution widths of 1400px... You should center your layout, so as to balance the amount of blank space on either side of the layout.

Your site title looks rather odd. As if it was put over the header image more like an after-thought. Sure, a header image should stand out, but it shouldn't look "out of place". I'd suggest you put a thick white border around the text same as you did with the header image.

I see you don't capitalize your letters at the beginning of sentences. I understand that you might think of blogging as something informal, but basic grammatical rules are not that hard to follow... even if you're writing informally. Another odd thing I notice is a larger gap between the letters. It almost looks as if you wished to emphasize each letter (from a word). Don't use such a large letter spacing, it makes reading much harder. And don't bold all your text. You should only use bolded text to attract attention to one particularly important information. Doing so for the entire text will make it harder for visitors to identify the more important information. Oh, and don't center the text, please. It should be left-aligned. Only very important titles should be centered.

I suggest you read the following articles, for how to better deal with typography (text alignment, font choices):
    http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/04/03/8-simple-ways-to-improve-typography-in-your-designs/
    http://www.smashingmagazine.com/tag/typography/
    http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/03/18/10-principles-for-readable-web-typography/

Your layout focuses a lot on its visual (graphical elements). This is not a bad thing, considering your site probably focuses on offering graphical "goodies" to its visitors. Nevertheless, you also have a lot of written content, which gets overlooked because of the way you chose to format your text. I'm not an artistic person, so I can only tell you that "I find it hard to read the text". That's why I prefer to link to articles written by people who know these things much better.

    Grey
Oh a monochromatic design, that's a brave choice. I haven't really seen any that I could say "wow this is a great way to pull it off", but then I've been known to eat my words.

The header image is huge! I was going to suggest that you lower the one for the pink skin, but then that was more or less fine. This one, on the other hand takes up about half of my screen. Furthermore, the blurry contour lines bother me to no end. It makes it hard for me to properly focus on the "characters" in the layout. Sure pencil sketches have their own appeal, and I love looking at those, but their contours are never blurry. Since there are no contrasting colors to help differentiate between various aspects of it, the contour lines MUST be clear enough.

Your title is a little better formatted, this time, but still not visible enough. For a moment there I thought that this skin's name was "welcome", until I glanced about. Put the site title, in the position of the welcome text. As for the latter, get rid of it. You only need to welcome your visitors on the main/home page. It's like greeting people. You do it once, when they pass through the door, not every time that they enter/exit a room, right?

Also, for this layout, the headings in your sidebar (Vote, Change Skin, Content, etc) don't have enough contrast with the background. It makes it hard to read, which means that my first impulse is to just ignore them and look for something "easier to see". The rest of the text suffers the same "ailment" as in the pink skin.

This theme is somewhat better than your pink one, mostly because it doesn't use such stark colors.

    Green
So far, this theme is my favorite, mostly because of the color choice. Nevertheless, the big blank green space on the right still bothers me. This time though, because the colors are not that stark, I immediately looked towards the center of the page.

Compared to the Pink theme, this one seems to have far less effort put into it, and the brown background for the text looks especially out of place. The yellow, dark yellow pattern from the header image would have probably been a better choice for it. Speaking of the header image, the site title has rather rough edges, as if the text was not saved at the highest quality.

Ah yes, and same text formatting issues, as with the other two.
Well, I'll be browsing using this skin, as it's most pleasant for me.

    Sidebar
Now I don't normally devote a whole section of the review to the sidebar, however you seem to have waaaay to much information in it.

First and foremost, you need to put the most important things first. As far as visitor's enjoyment goes, site navigation is more important than voting. I'd also suggest that it's more important than changing the skin... but maybe some people really dislike one of these, so I guess having the skins first is OK. Only, make sure not to put too many (should you want to add more), because then the navigation will be pushed too far down.

Next your navigation: it's too bloody long. Regular visitors have an extremely small attention span. So don't try to lob too much information at once, to them. They'll get confused and probably ignore the more important ones. I'd suggest having a maximum of 6 links in the navigation on the sidebar. Make 5 main categories (+ the back home link) and put everything else as a subcategory to one of the main 5 you have defined.

It's also very important to display the right kind of information first. For example, if I go to a graphic resource site, I want to see a showcase of the webmaster's artistic skills. I don't want to be bombarded by site history, rules, credits... Besides, all this information can be put into a site/domain category and linked as the last main link.

... and the rest is all advertising (aside the tagboard, but let's face it, most people write on a tagboard to pimp their own site). So... half of your sidebar (which is present on every single page) is devoted to advertising other sites? That eager to send visitors away?

Read the following article, which tell you how to have a less cluttered site (yeah it's referring to a blog, but same goes for every site):
    http://www.skelliewag.org/50-tips-to-unclutter-your-blog-44.htm

All in all, your layout is not that bad, however you really need to read up on typography. You have a lot of written content, and your current formatting makes things very difficult to read. Yes, I know it's boring, but just check out the sites in http://css20.com All of them have gorgeous designs, but that doesn't mean that they had to sacrifice readability of the text for it.

    = Content =
    --------------------------
As mean as this sounds, I really really don't feel like going through it. You have a LOT of it, and most of it sounds like something I've seen countless times. So you're going to have to REALLY impress me... or start pruning the bad. You've probably heard of it "quality over quantity", but really I'd much rather look at 3 good designs, than 33 mediocre ones. I'll just skip the pages that I don't have anything to comment on.

    -Home-
Your blog, containing updates... powered by Cutenews. Please consider switching to a different blogging script (or CMS - content management system). Cutenews has a lot of security holes, and it hasn't been updated for quite a while. If you're not comfortable with database-powered scripts, you should give Flatpress or FanUpdate a try.

I see you frequently have screenshots of layouts/other graphics displayed in your blog entries. I'd suggest styling them a bit. For example have a thick white border around them, and on link hover change its color. Also, instead of displaying the entire layout/graphic you could just display one part of it, to intrigue your visitors... and be more original.

    Apply
The first thing that goes through my mind is "... for what?". Make the link names as clear as possible, not everyone is thinking about the same things you are.

The submission form could use a bit of styling. The brown is a really bad choice, now that I can clearly see it, not being obstructed by a lot of text. This particular shade is not a great choice either. Read the following articles on HTML forms' styling:
    http://www.justskins.com/css-designs/animate-dead-html-forms-with-css/502
    http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2006/11/11/css-based-forms-modern-solutions/

I see that there's a really odd letter (Â) in between the two buttons of the submission form. Same happens on the Contact page. What's with it?

Your Staff and About the site pages contain very little information. If this is the case, there's no need for them to have their own separate page. Just put them in the same. Also, if you decided to have sections describing them, then at least put 2 paragraphs in there. It rather looks to me as if these are here because you THINK that you should have them.

    Link back
Textarea tags MUST be used in submission forms (inside a form tag). They should NOT be used to display code. There's a specific tag called code which does that. You can style it to show up like the textarea if you so wish.
    http://www.dustindiaz.com/styling-code-boxes/
    http://www.sohtanaka.com/web-design/styling-pre-tags-with-css-code-block/

    Credits
I didn't think there were still people who credited Google for something they used. I suppose your English teacher will be very pleased when you'll tell her you just quoted a book form the library instead of say Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights"... Same with the link to Neopets.
You should ask the permission of the person who CREATED these pictures. And only display them if they're fine with it. Then again, if you offer Neopets related graphics, why aren't YOU making these pictures?

    Rules
Ironic really, how you ask others not to change your work, but you have no trouble with changing others'. That's a prime example of double standards there. By the way, the term is to "alter" one's works, not altar. First of all altar is a noun (as such can't be used as a verb); second, it refers to the raised structure where offerings are made to God(s).

Wall of shame? Really?! I thought we had left those things behind in 2004, or something. Besides, what are you 5? To be still pointing fingers and laughing about others?

    Old layouts
If you have none, don't put up this page. Same for the other pages that have no content. Incidentally, you now have 3 skins, so update this page with the appropriate information.

    Graphics
Don't style the list of content links the same are the subheadings. It makes it confusing for the visitor to properly differentiate between them. Also don't right align the list of sub links. Unless a lot of your visitors are used to reading from right to left, this will making ease of reading things properly more difficult.

The graphics themselves are not bad, but they're nothing special either. Seen a lot of these. You display the Numb3rs layout in two different categories. Also I don't see any specific credit here... or is it again Google and Neopets? In that case you're using them illegally.

    Random guides
Erm... you're joking right? How to upload a picture to Photobucket? Then again... since I saw "how to make a screenshot" tutorial, this is slightly better. However unless you assume that your visitors are complete idiots, I'd suggest you take this tutorial off ASAP. Well sure they might not understand English... but then they wouldn't understand your tutorial either.

The link to editorial is broken. Fix it.

The request form has the same weird letter in between the buttons, as the contact and apply forms. Same for the advertising form and review submission form.

Ugh: please don't suggest Cutenews as a blogging script to ANYONE. It's high insecure, and NOONE should be using it. There are a lot of other much more secure scripts which have less security holes and haven't been abandoned.

On the sidebar, there's a link to "why am I in a scroller"... I have no idea what you meant by that. Also, it's broken.

    = Coding =
    ------------------------
You don't have a doctype specified. Use either XHTML Strict or Transitional.
    http://w3schools.com/tags/tag_doctype.asp

I see you make use of an external stylesheet, so why are you still using inline styling (tags which make use of the the style attribute)?

    <a href="index.php"><h6>Home</a></h6>
    <a href="apply.php"><h6>Apply</a></h6>
    <a href="staff.php"><h6>Meet Staff</a></h6>
    <a href="about.php"><h6>About Site</a></h6>

    <a href="contact.php"><h6>Contact Us</a></h6>
    <a href="link_back.php"><h6>Link Back</a></h6>
    <a href="credits.php"><h6>Credits</a></h6>
    <a href="rules.php"><h6>Rules</a></h6>
    <a href="wallofshame.php"><h6>Wall of Shame</a></h6>
    <a href="awards.php"><h6>Awards</a></h6>
    <a href="old_layouts.php"><h6>Old Layouts</a></h6>

What the...? First of all, you should use a list to display the list of links.
http://www.tutorialtastic.co.uk/tutorial/semantic_css_block_navigation - this will explain how.

Second, what's with the closing header tags? You didn't open one, so why are you closing them there? Furthermore, heading tags should be used to display titles and/or subtitles. They are not a substitute for paragraphs.

    <a href="http://underaged.info/index.php?id=53"target="_blank"><h6><img src="http://i42.tinypic.com/2woygyc.jpg"border="0"alt=""></h6></a>

First of all, the anchor tag (a) should be inside the header tag (h6). Second, (once again) header tags are not substitutes for line breaks (br) or paragraphs (p).

Don't use center tags. They're deprecated. Use CSS to center your text.

If you have decided to use XHTML, then don't switch to HTML at the end. be consistent throughout the entire coding.

All in all, your coding's a mess. Read the articles on http://tutorialtastic.co.uk (the XHTML and CSS ones I mean) for a start. And then refer to http://w3schools.com for more.

    Score: 2/5

I can see that you really try hard and really WANT to show everyone what a lovely site you have.
Unfortunately, a lot of other people have very similar content to yours. If you decided to cater to Neopets users, then focus on that. Let other content be. Your Neopets guides are good. Your tutorial on how to make a contour is also good.

Another thing I noticed: you have the tendency to make a page for every little thing. Really, if you barely have a paragraph on a page, try to combine it with another one. Tutorials/Guides are roughly the same thing.

There's really no need to have a large number of pages. Just make sure that your content is of quality.

Oh, and learn how to code properly, before giving other instructions on how to code their own layout.

    EDIT:
PHP has absolutely NOTHING to do with validation. PHP code is turned into HTML code before it is displayed by the browser. It's the HTML that is not valid.

Hi! I'm Sue (: I'm going to be using Firefox on Windows XP @ 1280x1024 resolution to review your site.

It looks like you have 2 skins, so I'll do first impressions on both.

    Skin #1:
It's extremely gray. I know I'm stating the obvious, but it'd make your site a lot more eye-catching if you added some color highlights. Try making the background the poogles are sitting on a gradient? Or use different colored brushes. Some colors that match with the gray would give the layout a warm feel.

    Skin #2:
It's bright. Really, really bright. It really hurts your eyes the moment the page loads. And in this skin, it's extremely pink, but in this one, the image has other colors! Use those colors for your headers and/or links. Don't just stick to shades of pink. Vary your colors to make your site look more appealing.

    Coding:
-Checking as HTML 4.01 Transitional -- 11 Errors, 2 warning(s) -- This could be because you don't have a DOCTYPE declared. Go here to read about declaring a DOCTYPE.
    - Checking your CSS! -- Congrats, your CSS is valid (: It's always a plus to have valid CSS to make sure no random codes are floating around to mess up your site.

    Grammar/Spelling:
I scanned through most of your pages, your spelling/grammar seems good, so I'll continue.

    Content:
    - Graphics: (By the way, you have a random "/center>" tag floating around at the bottom of your links.) Your neopets related pet pages just look like solid colors+brushes+image+text. They're pretty basic, but look nice as petpages on Neopets. I like your Altador themed pet pages a lot better. Notebook styled pet page looks nice as well!

Your non-neo related lookups look nice. Again, on the neo-related lookups, they look like colors+brushes+image+text.

I'm liking your splat guild layouts. They look very nice. I'm not liking the full guild layout very much. The colors are very bland, with the exception of the picture. The purple links in the preview picture seem to not fit in with the layout? I suggest using colors from the picture to make everything flow a bit more.

Tutorials: I only see one tutorial and it's extremely basic. I think anyone can find out how to add a border around the image, but I guess it doesn't hurt to have somewhere for reference.

Random Guides: Again, extremely basic. Although Photobucket can be pretty annoying for a first time user, it has its own FAQ page located on the site. There's no need to create a tutorial elsewhere when help can be found on the site itself.

Game Guides: I like how detailed your tutorial for Kass Basher is. It's good to have a detailed game tutorial, as they often get frustrating. You should note, you don't need "event" after "RE event". "RE" itself is already "random event".

    Other:
    - Your twitter updates extend out of your sidebar div. That may just be because the link itself doesn't wrap very well.
    - Customize your ShoutMix box! I know the website has an option for you to change the colors. Make it match with your site, as the lightgreen/white doesn't go very well with your layout.
    - Your advertisement page says 'CuteNews Hosting' at the top. I'm not sure if you meant to have it as is, but if it isn't, I suggest changing that so you won't confuse your visitors.

Overall: Your site looks nice, although it can be very unpleasing to the eyes. You want to make your site appealing to your visitors, not blind them. Darker or lighter shades of pink might work, since it'll make the Meepits in the layout image stand out more. There's a lot more colors you can include in your layouts.

I'm convinced you have the ability to make great looking content. I suppose it's just a matter of time. Just keep working on it, and don't forget, those colors in the images you used are there for a reason. Use them! :)

    UPDATED 25 Apr 09:
I like the new layout much, much better :) the image looks interesting and there's more than one color used! Good job on making the layout not so blinding :) it's very easy on the eyes, now.

Kiranya - thanks for the review! I am still a new site, and am adding up more content. I fixed the random /center> tag that you had found. I also have a few more tutorials and graphics planned.
I decided to remove the twitter option thing, and now have it as a link to my twitter account. I wanted to leave it the basic colors so that it would work with all the layouts - I'll see if there's an option to change them in each layout, I think there may be a way to do that..
Fixed the advertisment page - thanks for that!

Thanks for all the wonderful help!

Heya Aashni. You already know me, but I decided I would do a nice review for you. I love reviewing, should I add reviews to C-M-T?

I'm using Opera, and pretty much always do.
Your layout looks amazing in Opera and loads really fast.
Both layouts are very good but the only thing I don't like is that it's better than mine hahaha. xD
The banner is really nice and I like how it has the lines only on the background meepits and not on the main meepit. It also looks good with the basic text, because nobody likes text that is TOO fancy.

    Graphics:
The guild layouts look like you've taken a lot of time to do and they are quite fascinating. The userlookups are pretty good, the heart broken one is amazing. The other one is OK. The non neo userlookups are amazing, they look a bit better than the neo ones. I love the lord of the rings ones, you largen the images and they look like they are real. I absolutely love the penguin one!

    Tutorials:
Your outline tutorial looks really good. I haven't got Photoshop right now so I can't try it out but it looks good all the same.

    Overall:
Overall I think that it's a pretty good site. Maybe some more tutorials and then it would be awesome.
I give you four full stars out of five.

Hey Charox! Thanks for the awesome review!!
I need to add up a few more userlookups and tutorials, and I already have a few planned, I've just been busy working on my secret project (to be released soon.. )
    Thanks for the great review!

Hi, I'm Jenny and I will be reviewing your site in Mozilla Firefox, in a Windows XP computer. :) I will try not to be so harsh if I don't like your site; i'll give you some constructive criticism.

When I first go to your site, it's VERY pink. BLINDING pink XD. The banner looks plain because there's not really anything except a pattern in it. The "The New Fearless" is regular, with no effects in it, you just outlined it. Your HTML isn't valid so you should fix some things. For example, some things are needed like the parse code. You should add this:

And you NEED the doctype, so this should fix it:

Put that on to the top of your document.

I see you have another skin so I'm going to check it out :)

In my opinion, it is a bit better than the last one but I think you should not make it JUST grey and add some more colors for some contrast. Anyways, it takes a long time for the updates to show up. You also don't have valid coding for this layout.

    Graphics:
I don't like the navigation XD it looks very stretched out when i click on graphics. any ways i'm just going to look at one of the pages (the user lookups) They are cute, i love the "Heart Broken" one best. i think you should make your credits a bit smaller though because no one really wants that to be a big part of it.

Ok, your site's ok :). It's not taht great but it's not that bad either :)

Anyways, I hope you like my review. I hope I'm not that harsh on you. I'll give you 3 and a half stars because you need a bit more work on your graphics but if you can work on it a bit more, The New Fearless will be a great site!

Using Firefox on Windows | Report This?

    Aashni's Response:

    Thanks Jenny!

About the doctype thing, I'm using PHP Includes, and I wasn't sure if they would work with my site if I added them onto the pages.

I made another layout, this time using different colors! I would love it if you could have a look at it, and tell me what you think!
