    Hey!

Good to see another Canadian around here!

My first thoughts about your site was wow! The layout's pretty cool/good! I really like how you've worked the green and purple together. They're both very nice colours! The font is easy to read, it's not too small nor is too big, which is nice. There are so many sites where fonts were really small a few years ago (I think it was an IN thing with blogs, the smaller the better!) and some presist now, and it's just annoying. Your sidebar is nice since it's not very cluttered.

I like that you have articles on your site! Way to express yourself. I've been meaning to write some and put them up on my site, I"m just lazy sometimes hehe. I liked your article about the top 5 pet peeves on the net, especially the part about the "My site" thing. You're completely right and I agree 100% with you!

Overall, good job on the layout! I really like our site.

Hey Jacky, I have to admit, your sites probably the better ones on the high notes I’m going to be grading, first, you’ve already impressed me with those colors, I love that design with the wave, very vista & future themed, the drawing I’m going to have to say eh, there’s better images than that, she looks kind of shaped funny and out of place. It’s like she’s dreaming of this beautiful place. I’m wondering why there’s a solid violet line going through the girl’s image when she’s OBVIOUSLY supposed to be on top of or in front of that purple table matting? Not bad for a personal site. The quality of the site design is out of this world. The links and menu: fantastic! I’m not so crazy about the dating and title, and the fonts are very tiny on my screen. Your commenter’s idea is commonly used, but I like how you linked everything on the site. Debious.nu sounds like a place I’d visit just because of it’s insane name, the about me link has pretty much all I need to be satisfied with, I won’t go into detail seeing how others have already beat me to it. You have tons of goodies and I see you’re not lazy when it comes to them so great job, keep it up! These are very useful goodies people should consider. You have so many people you know, but could you add their site name next to them or something because many people don’t follow names, they follow site names or URLs, be considerate towards everyone, not just what you prefer. Speaking of your links, great job, I really love how you linked everything, even on the background, the bright links really grab attention right away! You did a beautiful job on the contract I can see. You have a STORE! That’s great! It’s incredible, how much revenue have you raked in so far?

I think you have done an absolutely GREAT job on this. First of all, I love the contrast in the color scheme you chose. The dark purple color is definately an eye catcher. Great placement of links at the top, easy to read. I love the added highloght to the pages with the added shadow to the bottom. Sitemap, RSS, very good! Everything in place for a search engine to spider you.

If selling products is your thing, I would suggest you make a much bigger banner and "get it in their face". The banner on the right is too small and I barely saw it myself. Your eye goes right to the text on the left. Dont forget that readers and sight viewers usually go from left to right.

Your product shopping cart is awesome with the zooming and the capability to let users design their own and see it online before they actually submit.

    Good job!

First impression, great. Very organised and original art in the layout! Huzzah! I love seeing sites that use art in them, drawing art I mean...
Anyways, I like the colors and how everything is set up.

Your content is very good, your blogs are interesting, your reads are equally as interesting, and your about page is very complete. I liked your how to be a douchebag, very unique. lol I really have no suggestions on your site, it's very good.

I also checked out your dA page and you have some really great art. Keep up the awesome works. =)

Hi there Jacky. Yes, I will be reviewing your website from my island today- basically means from my viewpoint =P mm, looking at your website, it looks a ton better than mine, so therefore, I am not really sure if I am going to be able to give any criticism, but I'll try and look for one if that's what you would like.

First off, the layout is amazing. Great job on the colors. Everything is in place. It's perfect. That's a pretty tall table she's at haha~ very creative and the footer looks great as well. Amazing how a table turns into paper, I just thought that's awesome and very wacky in a good sense.

This is of no importance, but if you want to, you could find a bullet that's a color that's a part of the colorscheme used in your layout. I don't see much blue possibly besides the nu at the end of title of the site, but well.. nevermind, I guess it would look better with blue, yea, thinking about having the bullet purple or green just might make it look boring and yellow might be too bright, so nevermind, you did well XD. Sorry you're probably annoyed that I typed a huge paragraph discussing about the bullet and then changing my mind.. well onward~

Your blog entries are very organized and simple. No fonts clash colors with anything on your website.

Perhaps your website might be a little more convenient if the sidebar from the index page followed you as you access other pages? Maybe you have already thought that and decided not to, idk I think from my viewpoint that it would look a little more, easy to the eye? o.o That's just me XD

umm.. all of your pages are really organized well, I like how the hover effect follows you from page to page. (navigation links)

I unfortunately don't see anything to change your website other than the ones stated above which you might have already gave thought of. You did really well, good job Jacky!

My first impression was wow the colors are amazing. Till I saw the drawing of the little girl. Have to say that looks a little freaky how distorted she looks. Outside of that the formatting on this layout looks amazing, and again the color scheme looks beautiful, easy on the eyes, the white content section really blended in very well. Overall the layout is pretty damn good. Although I kind of didn't like how the side bar was only visible on the index page. The content, since it's a personal site can't really say much on the blog section but the other pages, are neatly formatted and I have to say your reads are pretty damn helpful. Will be going back for sure. This site looks good I have nothing to really complain about. I'm not very good with checking codes so I normally go for the finished product. I get no errors, misalignments or odd looking pages while viewing it on netscape/1280x800. Great job!

Hello, Jacky! I have heard much about you so I am rather looking forward to this review. I probably won't have *much* insight, but I will offer what little I can to you. :)

    First Impression:

At first I thought the use of the teal and purple were unusual, in a very good way. I absolutely love to see color combinations that you do not see on every website. I am a big fan of design and this is what I hear is your specialty, so I bet this is going to be more fun than I first imagined.

One thing that bothered me a tad bit is the solid 5 pixel teal bar on the top and bottom of the page. I figured it was for some structure on the layout, but to me it really just looks like something else was supposed to be there and was forgotten about.

Also it might just be my monitor (I had to get it's poor little brain reset very recently and things haven't been exactly the same ever since, so it really honestly might be my monitor!) but the gradients in the header image aren't very smooth in their transition, they are sort of chunky?

All that said, I am not trying to sound like a nag. It's very pleasing to the eye. I better move on or this might turn into the First Impression slash Design section. ;)

    Originality:

This is a new section I have decided to add, thanks to the prompting of the suggestions above this textarea. I think your designs are extremely original as is your artwork. I had never seen a lot of your art, so when I did I was speechless. I must stop at the risk of sounding like a kiss-ass though, so onward.

Originality is pretty much 100% here, ma'am. Oh crap, you are younger than me so I guess I shouldn't call you ma'am...

    Coding:

Well I can honestly say that I wasn't expecting a little red favicon to show up whilst checking your XHTML on the W3C Validator, so I wasn't surprised that it's good. Same with the CSS validator. Your coding looks nice and tidy, although I don't generally get too nosy with others' codes because I don't want to be rude. :)

There was one little thing that my HTML tidy checker noticed on the index page. There seem to be three {small}{/small} tags that are empty like that. They occur directly before the {/li} tag on your side blog in case you wanted to know.

Other than those small tags, your HTML is nice and tidy, too. Again, I really did not doubt this to be the case with your reputation.

    Design:

Oh yes, my favorite part! I mentioned a couple of things way up there so this might not be as long as usual... Hopefully, for your sake. -.-* You probably know about my being a bit *too* windy.

I think maybe the background color stands out a bit too much because it draws my attention away from the actual blog part to the outer-space. I really like the sly uses of gradients you use all over, I like to look for details like that. Gradients are probably my favorite thing to use on a design but I don't usually use them very successfully. This looks fab.

I also love the use of Century Gothic that I have seen on your designs. Well honestly the only two I have ever seen were Dubious and then of course Rev.iew.me. It's a nice font, gives my eyes a break from Serif fonts.

I think the box that you are using to plug commenters with looks a little off. I am in the opinion that it would look better as a block, the way it is now, but with no border and just a solid background color that differs from the white of the main content background color.

The only real other valid suggestion for the design part I have would be to maybe make the navigation links bold. That teal on the purple right there is not quite contrast enough in my opinion. Either that or make the teal even lighter? The white link contrasts well.

I guess I don't have any real great advice for design, just tiny things here and there. Moving on!

    Content

UGH, way to be a super hottie, Jacky!! Lets see here.. You are a great coder, a fantastic designer and now an ultimate looker. Share the love, man!

Ok since I am reviewing, I am not going to read every single word in these sections. I am just skimming a bit. Specific comment: How to be a Douche Bag made me laugh out loud. F-T-W. :)

The tutorials you have are quite unique I must say. I just said that I would be skimming yet I found myself reading the two drawing tutorials in their entirety. Curses! So while this review will take you a while to read most likely, I probably spent a good 30 minutes just going through things and being distracted. That is a great thing, though. You definitely want your users to be enthralled when they come to your site...!

I think you should add another linkware illustration or two that way the title (Linkware Illustrations) would be more true and hopefully nice, honest people can enjoy more of your work! :)

Alright, you have got to inform me on something. On your website icons page, you say (and I quote...!)

I have a special icon already prepared to replace it with if you try. :) (Psst, it’s something no one would want as their icon. ;D)

What IS it that replaces the direct-linked image? I must know. :)

I like the Goodies section because it shows people some great snippets of information without overwhelming the viewer.

Links are well, links. Another curious question, do people beg you to be on your link list? I wondered because of what you said on there about not asking to be put on the list. Begging is very unbecoming, I certainly wouldn't link someone that begged either.

One last content comment: SHOES. I WANT JACKY SHOES. Ok, that's all! :)

    Final Thoughts:

I always hate going "with-the flow" if I can help it, but I really do think you have deserved a 5 out of 5 rating. I noticed that some of the people that came here and reviewed were giving people that were more "popular" really good ratings but I think that the fact that you are very talented truly outshines your popularity.

I do believe this is my very first 5/5 rating. You earned it, and you now have another faithful follower! Bravo!

    First impression: Hi. XD

Design: It's no surprise that you have a very nice layout here - in fact, given what I have previously seen of your web design skills (both on Dubious, Snark and of course right here on Rev.iew.me) it would be a surprise if this layout was not wonderful either.

I am once again in awe of your abilities as an artist, and you use your skills to great effect with the illustration in the top right of the header. You have an amazing eye for colour and once again it shows here, both with the different types of purple but also the green and white mixed in. I wouldn't have pegged those purples and greens as working together, but you showed they most certainly do. Your layout is sleek, professional, but with just enough personality and quirkiness to hint at the fact you are an art student.

About: All your sections here are laid out nice and neat, and like the rest of your site have the right combination of professionalism and artistic expression. It's neither boring nor way too out there.

Goodies: I love this section. You have so much fantastic stuff here, and I must confess that I have used some of it.

-- Opinions and Articles: These are excellent and I hope that there are more to come. You make some very good points in all of them, and I am particularly fond of "the Public and Your Site".

-- Freebies and Downloads: This is the amazing part of the site. I love that you are offering linkware illustrations (I am actually working on a design for a clique using your jumping girl) - the only problem I see here is that there isn't enough stuff here! More illustrations, please? Your icons and other goodies are also fantastic.

Links: Like the rest of your site, it is clean and nicely organised.

Overall: You have a fantastic site and I can't wait to see how it develops further, and how future designs take it. I'll definitely be coming to you if I need a totally awesome layout for professional purposes.

Well, well, hello! As with reviews that I do that seem like I won't have very much to say as far as criticism goes, and I hate to sound too gushy, or to provide a summary of what's ON your site (because I'm sure you know), I am writing a long introductory paragraph in an attempt to distract you from the fact that I probably have nothing of importance to say.

I've decided, for extra goodness, to use your article on "Writing Good Reviews," to write this one. So, you will also maybe be able to find out if your article is actually useful! Yay!

So, right now, I am going to consider design. Your design is definitely attractive, and the colours are rich and easy to view. It loads quickly, and you've used your own illustrations, which is not only deliciously legal, but amazing. Your design has this 3D look, which I love. The content pops out. The colour scheme is very original. At first I wasn't sure if I completely enjoyed it, but I quickly changed my mind, and attributed my uncertainty to the fact that it is a scheme that isn't used often, and when it is, it isn't used well. You've used it well. Your code is valid and pretty, and as such, your design renders well. Everything is legible, and headings are clear and distinct from the main body text. It's definitely an effective design, and is intriguing from top to bottom.

On to content. I love the way you've set up your about page, using it as a portal to the two different sections relating to yourself or the site. Your little About the Author blurb describes you pretty well, and made me giggle. All of your information in both your Author and Site sections are interesting and relevant.

Your Goodies section goes above and beyond what is standard for "goodies," on a personal site. You have no clue how sick of blended avatars I am. :P Your icons are adorable, and I am REALLY intrigued as to what the "special icon," for direct linking is! Providing quality illustrations as linkware is not something you see often, I would love to see more of these! That's probably an issue with your site-- I realize that you're busy, but I WANT MORE. You provide such quality goodies, it's hard for the visitor not to be greedy and want more from you! ;) Your articles are also interesting and informative. I loved your e-Annoyances most, I think. :) All of your goodies are original and fun.

OMG I HAVE FOUND A BLINDING AND OBVIOUS ERROR ON YOUR LINKS PAGE!!! And that is, that you link to aisling-b.net! Tsk tsk. It's dreamling.ca now :( :( :( HA! I got you for ONE thing at least! Mwahahaha.

Overall, I think your site is amazing. Simple enough. :P

A quick warning: this review will not be constructive at all, because I am too busy melting into a pile of goo at the awesomeness that is Dubious. So I apologise in advance.

I don't usually like purple, but I really love the shade you've used. It looks so rich, for lack of a better word. The illustration is, in true Jacky style, absolutely adorable, the navigation is creative, the kitty illustration on the footer is AWESOME, and everything is organised and well laid out.

One thing I don't really like is the random teal-y bars you have at the top and bottom of the layout. They just look out of place. (They're not that bad, though; I wouldn't have pointed them out except I feel the need to say SOMETHING constructive!)

There isn't enough contrast between the dates on your posts and the background, at least not on my crappy old PC's background. Admittedly, its colouring is a little messed up, but if you increased the contrast for people like me who sometimes have to rely on computers from early 2000... well, that would be nice! (There, I said something else vaguely constructive!)

    Now, onto the content!

    ABOUT
I like how you've split this page up; it's well laid out and easy to navigate. I won't review each page separately; that would be pointless, since there are no mistakes to speak of. You've done a good job balancing the amount of information, and everything in this section was generally quite interesting. Uh... I wish I could offer something in the way of criticism, but... I can't. See, this is what you get when you have a flawless site! No criticism!

    GOODIES
I love all of your articles; they're entertaining and very well0-written. I have linked your article about online pet peeves before in reviews, because I think it's a good resource.

I really wish you would add more linkware illustrations and WP guestbooks, because you only have one of each and I KNOW you are capable of making incredibly high-quality content. Your website icons are adorable and very useful; you could see me using them in the near future, though rest assured, I won't direct-link!

The to-do lists are absolutely adorable and such a creative idea. I have a strong feeling that I'll be implementing a to-do list on my own website soon, complete with Jacky-created icons!

The Jacky Sim is also creative and does actually look like you. I realise you probably won't redo this, but if you ever do, may I suggest using custom hair so that the Sim looks even more like you?

Your guides and tutorials are helpful and clearly-written, so good job! I do have one suggestion for the resources section, which is to change the YS.nu link to rev.iew.me!

    LINKS
I love how you've organised these in 4 columns - good use of space. Also, thanks for linking me. :)

I won't review your store since it IS an external link, but I love it. As you probably know.

So, I really have nothing to suggest! What little I did have in the way of criticism was very minor and doesn't change the fact that you have an impeccable website. I adore reading your blog and looking at your gorgeous designs. Dubious is truly one of my favourite websites.

Yours is one of those popular sites that actually deserves its popularity, because I think your layouts are gorgeous and your content is interesting. I've enjoyed reading your blog in the past, and your articles are filled with good advice (I particularly like "Accessibility Isn't a Trend"). Of course I post on your forum Snark, and it's a big thing to start a forum that actually catches on and doesn't just fizzle away in two weeks, so kudos for that. Maybe I've just missed it and you're actually a jerk half the time ;), but I never notice you being mean, which seems to be a big thing with a lot of popular sites out there. I'm talking about any that consider their blunt, rude, put-down attitude to be a good selling point for their blog. I don't understand that as a selling point, and I'm glad you don't seem part of that.

So, in summary: pretty site, interesting blog, useful articles, and you seem to be a nice person. :)

I'm using Firefox on a Mac. Not sure what the exact specs are since I'm at university :)

Your current design reminds me of one Bobbi-Lee from intotherain.org had a while back - it depicted an illustration where she was being productive on her laptop. Have to say I relate to yours that bit more since I am far more likely to procrastinate by drawing kitties, snoozing and drinking coffee.

Immediately I'm drawn to the colour scheme. Colour is a particular fancy of mine so it makes me giddy to see a triad - purple, teal and gold. I think it's imperative to have a good understanding of colour to create pleasing on-screen design. Naturally this is spot on.

I have a couple of suggestions which may be of use. Your sidebar and content are clearly two distinguished entities, but I'd recommend alternate line heights. Perhaps you could increase that of the content slightly to see what it looks like.

I also recommend adding a link home to the script title 'Dubious' in your image header. Website titles positioned on the left often give the impression that they lead to the index.

I'm also not keen on two (fairly trivial) design elements - the chevron next to the 'Store' link and the and the odd teal bar at the top and bottom.

I understand the chevron indicates an external website, but the colour and positioning seems out of place. Is it really a necessity? I don't think your website will be any less usable nor navigable if you were to remove it.

The teal bar also contrasts against the glowing curves underneath, and I'm sure the top bar is bigger than the bottom one. I thought it was a browser error at first.

Overall, this is exactly what a personal blogging website should look like. It looks beautiful and is wonderfully usable. Well done :)

I love your designs, they're always wonderful. But this design isn't one of my favourites. I don't know if it's the colour scheme or the artistic style of the character on the top, but something about it rubs me the wrong way.

That being said, your art skills surpass mine by about 950%, so as much as I whine about this, I really have nothing to back me up ;)

Things I like about this layout:
    -The footer.
-The overall look is very nice, it's just COMPARED to your other work, I think you've done better. But it's still a lovely layout.
-The dates on entry titles. Looks neat!
-I like the way the comment speech balloons are set up (and as a sidenote, while looking at them: WTF re: winnie the pooh's comment?!)

Things that bother me about the layout:
    -The colour scheme
-The bottom section of each entry regarding comments. I think it doesn't 'fit' with the layout's look. I almost feel like a solid purple background with white text would work, but it's hard to say for sure.
-The bullets. They also seem out of place for whatever reason.
-I noticed that in content areas, headers such as, "Goodies and articles" are closer to the text ABOVE them than to the text that they're heading. It seems odd.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Content...
I could swear you've really beefed this up since I last surfed your content. It seems like there's a lot MORE for some reason!

In your autobiography, I thought that this sentence: "I am blonde, blue eyed and bespectacled as well as a twenty one year old aspiring illustrator, designer and web developer."

seemed awkward. It seemed like you were tying together two totally random subjects. Maybe your appearance doesn't even need to be explained, since you have a picture on the right :)

Otherwise, I liked your autobiography, although by the title of the section, I was expecting your life story or something, instead of a few paragraphs.

re: zombies - they scare the shit out of me too. I can't watch zombie movies unless I want nightmares for weeks.
re: your sweet sixteen - Well, my dog died. So there.

...It almost feels wrong to joke about that.

    re: pancakes - awwww!

As far as your articles go in goodies, I think my interest in webdesign has pretty much gone down the pooper, because at one point I would have loved to read them, but now I just... don't care. Is that wrong? It's certainly wrong for a reviewer to say, but I'm just letting you know that because of this, I didn't read them. But I didn't dock any marks, either :P

I wouldn't mind seeing more icons and illustrations- I love looking at peoples' creative work/sometimes downloading it.

Your drawing tutorials seemed really detailed and would be totally useful. I know it's a lot of work to do these kind of things, but again: More would be awesome.

On your links page: Did you link me? Yes? Okay. 100%.

    Nice work.
And to Nellie - Don't worry, I'll submit mine soon :P

Thanks for this in-depth review Rose! It got me thinking about a lot of things on my site that I plan on adding/overhauling in the near future. ;)

I do need some clarification/ideas from you though.
    - Bullets. I do love having image bullets, but I was wondering what makes them seem out of place? Ideas? Maybe having them just a solid colour instead of faux-bevelling?
    - Comments section: do you mean on the front page or on the single page?

    Style/Design
Jacky always has phenomenal designs, so no real complaints there. I especially enjoy the subtle gradient in the white content area and the page shadow in the footer. I think it's small details like that that really make a layout.

Since I harp on padding so much, I want to highlight that the layout on the one-column pages is successful primarily because there is enough space on either side of the content that it doesn't feel cramped. YAY! Finally!

I found the navigation a weensy bit confusing. I'm not sure why there's a » before the store (maybe to highlight it?) since it kind of makes it look like a breadcrumb nav. I appreciate that it's a bit different since it's an external site, but perhaps a pipe | separator would have been better? It makes it seem like it's a subpage. Also, if it were me I'd put an "invisible" link over the site name in the header (display: block; and give it a height & width) and get rid of the "index" link in the nav. That's personal preference though and I think it works as-is.

Layout looks good on short pages as well as long pages, and content is broken up nicely (headers, list icons, etc.).

Comments design is fun. I do find myself wondering what happens to the speech bubble if someone leaves a one-line comment, but it might work just fine.

    Content
Great articles, a blog, freebies... I think we're covered here. It's all quality stuff, which is important.

    Coding
There are a couple coding errors on some pages, but they are very minor (single.php has an extra closing small tag, sitemap has an extra closing list item tag, homepage has an empty small tag) and easily fixable.

The DTD is Transitional, which is more than fine, but I'd be willing to bet you could code in XHMTL Strict pretty easily.

    Originality
Dubious always shines in this area, primarily because of the great illustrations but the writing is great as well.

Overall, this is a fantastic website and Jacky has been a source of inspiration for me for several years.

Thanks Meggan, for your great suggestions! I did implement the invisible link over the header image, I can't believe I didn't do it before. :) However, I did keep the index in my menu, just in case.

Also, feel free to leave a one-line comment to see how it works. ;) hehe! And thanks for the heads up regarding my little coding errors.

All-in-all, thanks for the great review!

I have been a fan of Jacky's designs since the Mirkwood Wench era and they just keep getting better. One particular feature of each of her designs that never fail to amaze me are the illustrations. I have always been jealous of the artistic people of the world and I'd have to say that Jacky is near the top of the list. More so because I know how awesome she is as a person as well.

This particular design is appealing to me, because like many others, the use of purple in a web design can come off looking very bad but Jacky pulls it off amazingly. The combination of the purple with the turquoise is very striking... and lets not forget to mention the very cute illustration.

Her content is exceptionally organised and divided up really well. While I prefer reading as much I can in only one click, I'm not too fussed having to click a little bit further to read more. It makes sense for people with short attention spans. Everything is well written as well, which is fantastic considering how artistic Jacky is. I don't mean to stereotype, but in my experience, artsy people are more likely to be those who can't string a coherent sentence together. Jacky does it well... most of the time *winks*.

Coding is good aside from a little hiccup that resulted from adding the link to rev.iew.me to the sidebar. I'd tell you what it is, but you'll probably get it instantly when you see it.

Yet again, I've got not idea how to give this website any kind of constructive criticism because it's too damn perfect. When are the people with the bad websites going to join?!

Thanks for the review Nellie! Its always nice to know that people from my old days still follow what I do! Oh, and thanks for the heads up re: RVM link. :)
